The El Segundo boys’ volleyball team is league champion for the first time in school history after winning at North Torrance last Thursday in three games, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. Bobby Romano ended the match with a kill as the No. 1 team in Division IV celebrated as Pioneer League champions.

North Torrance, which handed El Segundo its only loss in league play, needed a victory for a share of the league title. The Eagles won it outright with the victory and headed in the CIF Southern Section playoffs as the No. 1-seeded team in Division IV.

“I can’t ask for more,” said El Segundo head coach Eduardo “Anjinho” Bacil. “(To) share with the ‘Hov’ too, partner, guy who helped me a lot in my early years and have his kid (Hunter) play on the team. It’s a dream come true. My hometown (El Segundo), the place when I first came here, I first lived.”

The Beach Reporter – El Segundo girls

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Quoting from The Beach Reporter - by Jim Leinonen

It takes a combination of talent and coaching to win in any sport and the El Segundo girls’ soccer team certainly has the talent to play with the best teams in the South Bay. The Eagles are looking to capture their second Pioneer League crown in three years with a team that has it all from defense to offense.

In 2006-07, the Eagles went 20-4-2 overall and 8-1-1 as they won the Pioneer League and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs before losing to Oaks Christian in the school’s best season to date. This year’s team is not far behind and has the potential to equal that season. This year’s team will always be one to remember no matter what happens in the end.

“I’ve been coaching for 11 years,” said El Segundo head coach Juan Mosquera. “I oversee the program and I have a lot of things to remember, but this team is special. This is a special team because, not only soccer, but because of the chemistry and the complete program is really good right now.”

The Eagles are led by four senior captains: Leana Timoteo, midfielder; Camille Kuebler, defense; Courtney Hobbs, defense; and Jenna Rich, midfielder.
