Monday, July 6th, 2009

By Larry Altman Staff Writer

Joyce DeWitt, a star on the 1970s hit television series “Three’s Company,” was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of drunken driving in El Segundo, police said today.

DeWitt, 60, of Santa Fe, N.M., was stopped at 4:19 p.m. Saturday when she drove around a barricade at Pine Avenue and Sierra Street near the city’s annual fireworks show, El Segundo police Sgt. Dan Kim said.
Witnesses said DeWitt pulled up in a black sports car, parked, and staggered toward a police officer standing in uniform next to his motorcycle.

She slurred, “Where the hell is East Oak Street?” a witness said.

An officer asked how much she had to drink and she said, “Just one.” She then reached into her car, pulled out a plastic container and began drinking from it.

It was unclear what was inside.

The Beach Reporter – Police officer in running for

Quoting from The Beach Reporter - by Jennifer Evans

In honor of the bravery displayed on the evening of April 11, 2008, when El Segundo Police Detective Scott O’Connor and Lt. Ray Garcia were shot and critically injured while patrolling the Pacific Theaters, Garcia has been nominated for “America’s Most Wanted All-Stars.” If he wins, he will share the honor with partner and friend O’Connor.

More than 125 police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians from around the country were nominated in this year’s “America’s Most Wanted All-Stars” competition. Of those nominated, eight will make it to the finals. Garcia has already been picked as one of the eight and with the help of Internet voting beginning April 5, he could be granted the grand prize of $10,000 and a trip for two to the NASCAR All-Star race in Charlotte N.C., where he will receive an award from “America ’s Most Wanted” host John Walsh on national TV.

“Ray wanted Scott to be nominated and Scott wanted Ray to be nominated; neither of them wanted to receive the honor without the other,” El Segundo Sgt. Jeff Leyman, who nominated Garcia, said. “It was really difficult to have to just nominate Ray but I could only nominate one and I chose Ray because his injuries were more serious. But the bottom line is that neither one of them would have survived if it weren’t for the other. They both saved each other’s lives that night.”

Garcia said that if he wins, he would split the cash prize with O’Connor as well as share the NASCAR trip with him.

Quoting from El Segundo water project will affect traffic – The Daily Breeze

Nighttime traffic in downtown El Segundo could be disrupted next week as crews install a recycled water pipeline.

Construction lasts from from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily from Tuesday through Friday near the intersection of Imperial Avenue and Main Street.

Activities include potholing, excavation, installation of the pipe, trench backfilling and asphalt resurfacing.

Motorists might notice temporary rerouting of traffic on Main Street, as well as temporary detours for westbound traffic on Imperial Avenue.

Also, right turns onto westbound Imperial from southbound Main will be restricted.

Sidewalks will remain open, and Main Street parking will not be affected.

Residents might also notice added noise, as well as some dust and vibration.

The recycled water pipeline is part of a West Basin Municipal Water District program aimed at decreasing the region’s dependence on imported water.

El Segundo’s project will add 4,700 feet of pipeline to carry recycled water, which will protect potable water in town.

The Beach Reporter – Modernization plans for LAX unveiled

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The Beach Reporter - by Jennifer Evans

On Nov. 18, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa unveiled the long-awaited Los Angeles International Airport’s modernization plan. Ironically, just one day before the unveiling, El Segundo’s Aviation Safety and Noise Abatement Committee had given its report to the El Segundo City Council regarding noise annoyance issues stemming from the use of the airport’s newest runway.

Now that the runway is completed and in full use, LAX will start construction on the $5 billion to $6 billion modernization plan which focuses on the Tom Bradley International section of the airport.

“We’re not upset in the least,” said El Segundo Mayor Kelly McDowell of the modernization plans. “It’s not a capacity enhancement and the gate restrictions still apply.”

LAX – which is bordered by cities such as El Segundo, Inglewood, Westchester, Mar Vista and Hawthorne – has always been a bone of contention for residents of the nearby area, who want to see a decrease instead of increase in airport activity.

A little more than three years ago when Villaraigosa was the mayor-elect, he told the Daily Breeze of his opposition to the expansion, which was the original plan of former Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn. “I’ve made it absolutely clear that I don’t approve the $11 billion proposal to expand LAX.” However in 2006, Villaraigosa announced a settlement between the airport’s surrounding airports and the LAX Master Plan. Villaraigosa’s settlement removed potential litigation obstacles so that Los Angeles World Airports could begin construction in early 2006 on the LAX South Airfield Improvement Project, which addresses the issue of safety and runway incursions. The settlement also provided that, in the following three years, LAWA would develop new plans for future airport construction consistent with the mayor’s vision.

It’s that time of year again when ghosts, goblins and creatures of all kinds stroll the streets of El Segundo playing games, jumping on bouncers, eating food and collecting candy at the city’s annual Halloween Frolic held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, on Main Street.

For more than 30 years, the Halloween Frolic has been a popular event for El Segundo residents, attracting as many as 5,000 people who come to enjoy the free event that promises a good time for any age. “I’ve been participating in the Halloween Frolic since we moved here 26 years ago,” said Patty Wood, El Segundo Parks and Recreation specialist. “It has always been one of the city’s best community gatherings. There is something for everyone here and it is a fun, safe way for families to enjoy Halloween.”

Held on Main Street between Grand Avenue on the south and Pine Avenue on the north, the Halloween Frolic is free to the public and will include eight carnival-style games and six inflatable bounce houses, including the popular obstacle course and rock climber. Children can purchase a $5 wristband, which will allow unlimited use to all the games and bounce houses available. The Beach Reporter –

The Beach Reporter - by Jennifer Evans

Having religious events on public school campuses can often be a source of controversy but so far, the students, staff and parents in El Segundo have been supportive of the first “Fields of Faith” event to be held Oct. 8, which will bring Christians and those who are interested in Christianity to El Segundo High School’s football field for a gathering of fellowship, music and prayer.

El Segundo High School teacher and coach Rick Sabosky is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor, and said that he believes and hopes that this event will help students have a better perspective on what their goals or aspirations might be.

“Kids are just so inundated with MTV and all the other stuff that is out there, and I just think that an event like this will introduce them to a deeper, more meaningful path than the one they might be on,” Sabosky said.

“I know everyone has their opinion on Christianity, but we just want this to be a positive event for students or for anybody who wants to participate,” he said, adding that the event is open to youth from the entire South Bay.

The event will feature a Christian rock band, a Christian rapper and student athletes who will give their testimony.

Fields of Faith began four years ago in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas with 23 fields and 6,000 youth. Last year, the event grew to reach almost the entire country with 75,000 students participating on 386 fields.

“Athletic fields provide a neutral and familiar spot for students to assemble,” Les Steckel, FCA president and a former NFL coach said. “Many nights are spent on those fields cheering on local teams, but on this particular night the praise belongs to God.”

Speaking of or even saying “God” is knowingly not permitted by teachers in the classroom. However, Sabosky explained that high school clubs of all types are permitted to use school grounds for events and fund-raisers as long as it is not during classtime hours.

“Everything we are doing is within the bounds of what is legal and although I am sure not everyone agrees, so far we have not heard any complaints about the upcoming event,” Sabosky said. “Everyone is extremely supportive.”

Oklahoma native Jeff Martin said he conceived the idea for Fields of Faith when searching for a way to address the spiritual battles facing today’s generation of youth. “Throughout history, God has sparked great spiritual awakenings though young people,” Martin said. “That is the power of what we are trying to accomplish though Fields of Faith. It goes beyond its appearance of a one-night rally on an athletic field. It goes to the heart of the future of a nation. It’s not just another event, it’s a change of culture.”

“Fields of Faith” will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the El Segundo football field.

“We don’t know what to expect,” Sabosky said. “We could get five kids and we could have 500 show up.” Play Audio
