El Segundo will be cruising this weekend when more than 350 hot rods and classic cars descend on the city this week for its 14th annual car show.
Hosted by the El Segundo Police Officers Association, the El Segundo Car Show has become one of the most renowned car shows in the South Bay. On Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Main Street will be lined with pre-1975 custom and classic cars, street rods, rats, cool daily drivers, antique sports cars and special-interest vehicles including special models brought in by Hot Wheels and El Segundo’s Automobile Driving Museum. The event will include free entertainment for all types of car enthusiasts, including live classic rock music and two raffles that will give away certificates from local eateries as well as a grand prize from Direct TV.
The El Segundo Police Department and Recreation & Parks Department will be hosting an educational presentation to inform the community of scams that thieves use to steal from unsuspecting victims.
Criminals use tricks and fraudulent representations to commit these thefts and often target senior citizens. These crimes can result in substantial financial and emotional losses to the victims but they can be prevented. Schemes such as the “Pigeon Drop” and different types of distraction thefts will be explained so citizens can protect themselves from these crimes.
Officers will discuss an actual case on how an entrusted caretaker was able to take advantage of a senior citizen and steal over $16,000.00.
The presentation will be held on January 18, 2011, 10:30am -11:30 am, at the El Segundo Joslyn Center located at 339 Sheldon Street in the City of El Segundo. A flyer for the class can be obtained at http://www.elsegundo.org/depts/police/ in the Crime Prevention section.

Education leader dies: Bob Kingston, who spent 33 years as an educator and administrator in the El Segundo Unified School District, has died.
After teaching seven years at El Segundo High School, Kingston was selected as the school’s assistant principal. He also oversaw athletics at the high school and, during the 1970s, served as the president of the South Bay Athletic Association, which he co-founded.
He became principal of El Segundo Junior School in 1975. When it was dissolved four years later, he returned to the high school.
In 1983, El Segundo Middle School reopened, and he reprised his role as principal until his retirement in 1987.
Cluing into what makes people want to stick around a fair for more than just food, games and shopping, El SegundoÄôs Hometown Fair this year will feature its first beer garden.
A tradition in El Segundo for more than 50 years, the Hometown Fair originally began as a way for the El Segundo High School Associated Student Body to raise money.
Originally staged in the Police DepartmentÄôs parking lot, today the fair takes place at Library Park located in the 600 block of Main Street. This year it will be Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. While the fair will feature most of the same, the Kiwanis-sponsored beer garden will be this yearÄôs newest tradition.
ÄúThere have never been any negative issues with the Kiwanis-sponsored beer gardens that I can recall,Äù said Recreation and Parks Supervisor Bob Cummings of other El Segundo beer gardens that the Kiwanis Club has sponsored in town. ÄúIt can be a sensitive issue because not everyone agrees we should have one, but it is something that people enjoy and we think it will help keep up the attendance.Äù
Santa Claus will be coming to town and waving a magic wand in El Segundo Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. when he will light up Acacia Street, otherwise known as Candy Cane Lane.
This year marks the 60th anniversary for Candy Cane Lane, which was started in 1949 by the late El Segundo resident Ken Baily, who had the idea to put up a Christmas tree at the end of the cul-de-sac street in hopes of bringing the community together during the holiday season.
Since Thanksgiving, Acacia Street residents have been working diligently at getting their decorations up in time as well as setting up ÄúSantaÄôs VillageÄù located at the end of the cul-de-sac where Mr. Claus will take a seat each night from Dec. 12 through Dec. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. Longtime Acacia Street resident Kevin Mortesen said this year, Candy Cane Lane has a couple of new residents as well as a returning resident whose home was under construction last year. ÄúIt will be exciting to see how the new neighbors decorate. They have already showed a lot of enthusiasm and have been with the rest of us down at the end setting up SantaÄôs Village,Äù Mortesen said. ÄúItÄôs always exciting because although you see people setting up, you donÄôt see the final product until Santa comes down and lights the street up.Äù
