El Segundo blue butterfly flourishing in LAX-area habitat – The Daily Breeze

The endangered butterfly’s population during summer 2010 was estimated at 111,562 to 116,474, a 30 percent increase from the previous year, said Richard Arnold, an entomologist hired by LAX.
“The present count has increased remarkably from the fewer than 500 El Segundo blue butterflies that existed in 1976 when it became the first insect to be listed as a federal endangered species,” said Robert Freeman, environmental services manager at LAX.
