Discussion continues on naming of library reading rooms
The Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. inside the El Segundo library to again discuss the naming of the four new rooms built with a $321,000 grant given by the City Council.
While the controversy seemed to revolve around the author selection, the council didn’t have a problem with the naming of the remaining rooms, Parkview East and Parkview West.
Depending on whether his schedule permits, El Segundo Mayor Kelly McDowell said he may or may not make it to Thursday’s meeting. However, despite his attendance, McDowell has discussed an alternate to permanently naming the rooms. The mayor suggested that the library do a rotating display of authors, showcasing a different author each month.
“No matter who we pick it is going to be the subject of controversy. Therefore picking nobody on a permanent basis elevates the problem,” McDowell said. “Rotating the authors will represent a fair and less controversial way of dealing with this.”
