Protection Sought for L.A.’s Easy Prey

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Is this what we are raising in El Segundo? How did this happen? I thought we had a nice little community here, but these monsters were raised here, in my hometown. I’m outraged. Something needs to change.

Los Angeles Times

Two 19-year-old men, Justin Edward Brumfield of Los Angeles and William Alexander Orantes of Inglewood, were charged Aug. 18 with attempted murder and assault. They pleaded not guilty and were ordered held in lieu of $1-million bail each.

Brumfield and Orantes told investigators they bought the video at a swap meet for $10 several months ago. They said they thought the video was “funny” and decided to target downtown’s homeless population, Det. Avila said.

In several trips downtown, Brumfield and Orantes told police, they alternated as passenger and driver, with the driver acting as a lookout and the passenger committing assaults. Investigators said Brumfield allegedly wielded the bat during the most recent assaults, while Orantes waited in the car.

Police believe there was a third victim that night, still unidentified.

The suspects don’t fit the profile of criminals, Avila said. Neither had a police record and both had good jobs, had graduated from El Segundo High School and came from stable families.

A Tank In Traffic?

Monday, August 29th, 2005

I’m driving home from work today and when I get to the corner of Vista Del Mar and Grand Ave. , where I usually turn away from the beach and up the hill to go home, there is a tank sitting at the light. Running. Not moving.

So, of course

Did William Orantes and Justin Brumfield live in El Segundo? Did they graduate in 2004? I got an anonymous email saying that they did. Please confirm or deny this, if you know. Send me email or leave a message in the Forum. Thanks. -cw

LOS ANGELES Two 19-year-old men are in police custody for allegedly beating two homeless men with baseball bats while they slept.

Los Angeles police say William Orantes and Justin Brumfield are each being held on 500-thousand bail, two days after they were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

One of the victims, Ernest Adams, remains in critical condition at L-A County U-S-C Medical Center after suffering severe head trauma.

Police say the young men told officers they had recently seen “Bumfights,” a video which shows homeless people beating each other, and wanted to do some “bum bashing” of their own.

People who work in downtown say Adams was known to sit near the third street tunnel and greet passerbys. They say he was a friendly man who was comfortable within his neighborhood.
